ICAP Spotlight: Claire Tupper
A Day at My Site
I am working with the Iowa College Americorps Program and my primary site is the Catherine McAuley Center, located in downtown Cedar Rapids. The Catherine McAuley Center, or CMC, is a non-profit organization with two programs: an Adult Basic Education Program and a Transitional Housing Program for Women. I work specifically with the Education Program where we have volunteers who tutor our students, most of them immigrants, in the English language. I got started there because I was interested in the Fulbright Program and was told that CMC was a great way to see if I had what it takes. The work that they do is simply amazing. If you want to leave a positive impact on someone’s life but don’t have a lot of time to give, this is the place to be. You can commit to tutoring just 1 hour a week for as long as you want.
I’ve been working with the Development office a lot recently and have been helping to kick start a new fundraiser for the center – an Olympics viewing party! I’ve learned how to teach English, interact with people of many different cultures, use SalesForce, enter/manage data, fundraise, and present my work to larger groups of people – including members of their board! Being an ICAP through Coe is one of the best choices I’ve ever made!
They are always in need of more tutors to teach our students – we have a waiting list just to get all of our students in! It’s less than 10 minutes to walk or 3 minutes to drive from Coe! We’d love to see more Coe students helping these people and our community at the Catherine McAuley Center!
