Coe College - Center for Community Engagement

Service Spotlight: Sarah Sylve

Boys & Girls Club

Where do you do your service?
I do service for the Boys and Girls Club of Cedar Rapids. Their mission is “to inspire and enable all young people, especially those that need us most to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizen.” They offer a safe space and activities for kids to do before and after school.

How did you get involved in this type of service?
I first got involved in Boys and Girls Club last year as an ICAP. I knew that I wanted to complete my hours working with kids so the office of community engagement helped me connect with this organization. As an ICAP I created a homework help program and helped supervise kids during various recreational activities. Now that I am no longer an ICAP, I spend less of my time with the club but still volunteer at all of their major events such as trunk-or-treat and their annual Thanksgiving dinner. I also organize a service project each year in which a group of Coe students wrap Christmas gifts for the kids. Its a lot of fun!

What is your favorite part about doing service with this organization?
My favorite part about doing service for this organization is getting to see the smiles on the kids’ faces. Nothing feels better than being able to bring happiness to a child. Everyone at Boys and Girls club is a part of a huge family and I am honored to be a part of it all.
